Gig Review - Discovery 2 showcase - 31st March 2016

Monthly event ‘Discovery 2’ at 229 The Venue in London was another successful night, with a packed audience. This line-up included Periscope View, Affairs, Archie Sylvester, and Matt Grocott & the Shrives.

Their last performance together, Periscope View played songs from their EP including ‘Overwrought’, ‘Stand Alone’, and ‘Playgrounds’. Their vocals very much give off the vibe of The Corrs, and another stand out feature of Periscope View’s set is the inclusion of a violin introduction which started off their last show as a band – very cool.

Next up were the energetic quintet from Manchester, Affairs. With a voice resembling that of Tom Smith from Editors, the Affairs frontman kept the audience on their feet and equally amazed at his dance moves while singing.  Songs from their upcoming EP ‘Stained Gold’ (which is due to be released in May) was produced by Ed Buller who had worked on albums with White Lies and The Courteeners. They performed ‘Play’, ‘Chicago Fire’ and ‘Out from the Deep’ which will be features on ‘Stained Gold’. They are currently signed to Yellow Brick Records. Watch our video of them below:

Continuing the entertainment was songwriter and guitarist Archie Sylvester. With his James Morrison-esque sounding vocals, he delivered such gems like ‘Draw the Line’, ‘Woman’ and ‘Berlin’ from his EP ‘One’ which was released last year through Spiritual Records on 23rd September.

The last act of the night was Matt Grocott and the Shrives. The indie band from Grantham rocked the venue with performances including ‘Leave Me in Peace’. Their style is reminiscent of The Verve and The Libertines. For those intrigued about the group, in 2014 they worked on their first full-length album with Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day) who produced and his son Joey Armstrong (Swimmers) who featured, and Grammy award-winning engineer Chris Dugan who recorded in Oakland, California.

‘Discovery 2’ once again proved to showcase very talented musicians who deserve to have more recognition and music paid attention to.
